An Important Mineral
MSM is methylsulfonylmethane, an excellent source of organic sulfur. Sulfur is the third most abundant mineral in the body, and is found in concentrated amounts in connective tissues and joint cartilage. It is required for the formation of disulfide bonds, an important part of many molecular structures, and is needed for the functions of many enzymes. MSM is thought to be important for maintaining the structure and function of joints.
Allergies and Other Effects
MSM has been shown to improve allergic symptoms in response to a wide variety of allergens, as well as improving the effects of antiallergy medications. It has also been found to improve symptoms of gastrointestinal upset. It reduces inflammation and is therefore useful for joint pain. It reduces the buildup of lactic acid, which is what causes cramping during physical activity. It also enhances the absorption of other nutrients from food.
A Good Source of Sulfur
Although it is present in foods, MSM is readily lost when the foods are processed, heated or dried. Supplemental MSM has been shown to be safe and well absorbed. AORs MSM provides a convenient form of this important source of sulfur.
