Nutrients for Immune System Health

Keeping the immune system strong starts with leading a healthy lifestyle - eating well, exercising, getting adequate sleep, minimizing stress and alcohol, quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy weight. Despite our best efforts, stressful situations still arise, and our diets can lack diversity, both of which can diminish our nutrient stores which are vital for proper immune function.

Various micronutrient deficiencies have been implicated in compromised immune health. Single nutrient deficiencies can alter the body’s immune response, suppressing immune functions. Particularly, micronutrient deficiencies of zinc, selenium, iron, copper, vitamins A, C, E and B-6, and folic acid have important influences on immune response. These nutrients help the immune system on multiple fronts including acting as antioxidants to protect healthy cells, supporting the growth and activity of immune cells, and aiding antibody production.

Another key nutrient that is vital for overall wellness and particularly immune health is vitamin D. While vitamin D plays a critical role in helping our bodies absorb and retain calcium and phosphorus for building bones, it also has been shown to provide protective effects against acute respiratory infections like the common cold and the flu.

Getting enough nutrients as part of a varied diet is required for the health and function of all cells, including our immune cells. As always, ensure you’re fueling yourself with a whole food focused diet that embraces diversity so you’re consuming different fruits and vegetables each with their unique vitamin and mineral profile. Where necessary, consider supplementation to fill nutritional gaps.

Supplements to consider:

N-A-C

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine or N-A-C, is an acetylated form of the amino acid cysteine. Cysteine is the most important precursor to glutathione. Glutathione is like a superhero for our immune system. It's a powerful antioxidant, which means it helps to fight off harmful molecules called free radicals that can damage our cells and weaken our immune response.

Our immune system relies on many different cells and molecules to defend us against infections and diseases. Glutathione plays a critical role in supporting these immune cells by helping them function properly. It helps to keep them healthy and active so they can do their job effectively.

It has been used for over 30 years for respiratory health, providing some relief to those suffering from chronic respiratory conditions such as the annoying post-nasal drip, sinusitis and chronic bronchitis.

C+ Bioflavonoids

This C+ Bioflavonoids combination provides the same pairing of vitamin C and bioflavonoids as that produced in nature. Vitamin C is considered an essential nutrient because the body cannot produce it on its own. Bioflavonoids are the pigments found in most plants that give fruits and vegetables their colour. Both function as phenolic antioxidants to help maintain good health.

Phenolic antioxidants are like reinforcements for your immune system. They're found in many plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, and herbs. These antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals can damage our cells and weaken our immune system, making us more susceptible to infections and diseases.

When we eat foods rich in phenolic antioxidants, like berries, grapes, spinach and nuts, these antioxidants help to protect our immune cells from damage caused by free radicals. This helps to keep our immune system strong and functioning properly.

Additionally, phenolic antioxidants have anti-inflammatory properties, which means they can help to reduce inflammation in the body. This is important because chronic inflammation can suppress the immune system and make it less effective at fighting off infections.

Frequently Asked Questions About AOR Vitamins & Supplements

Does C+ Bioflavonoids contain any grapefruit?

It doesn't contain any additives of grapefruit; the bioflavonoids are from immature oranges.

Do we conduct HMNR testing on all raw materials that we receive?

Each product is tested as per the pharmacopeia requirements for identification appearance etc. for some of these raw materials it is HNMR others it is chemical reaction tests. It would all depend on the requirements for the specific product. All raw materials are verified for identity with multiple tests for every batch we receive.

Why does AOR suggests taking NAC with food whereas others suggest taking it on an empty stomach?

This advice is required by Health Canada as NAC is a monographed ingredient. In a separate product in which contains NAC there was evidence that suggested the benefit of protein being eaten with the capsules allowing for better tolerance of the supplement, this was at the dosage we sell, for these reasons this was added to our NAC product adult dosage
