A Natural Approach to Women's Health Concerns
Fatigue, obesity, hypoglycaemia and diabetes are some of the main reasons women seek naturopathic treatment. When examining causative factors for fatigue, it is important to look at diet. Lowered levels of energy may be caused from eating too many refined carbohydrates and sugars. Healthy blood sugar levels are critical in maintaining and sustaining robust energy levels. To balance blood sugar levels, it is important to have protein at each meal. Proteins break down at a slower rate than do carbohydrates, causing less of a shift in blood sugar levels. For women, soy protein is an excellent source of protein. Not only does it regulate blood sugar levels, its phytoestrogenic effects balance hormonal fluctuations. For women trying to lose weight, managing blood sugar levels is key. When individuals eat refined carbohydrates in excess, a rapid rise in blood sugar ensues. Following that rise in blood sugar, insulin is released and the blood sugar levels can predispose the development of diabetes mellitus. If we continue to exhaust our pancreas in producing excess amounts of insulin, our cells will no longer be sensitive to the insulin that is produced. A diet rich in fresh vegetables, high fibre, and consuming protein at each meal, goes a long way to achieve ideal body weight. For overall health, women should exercise a minimum of 45 minutes 3 times per week. Exercise improves energy levels, regulates blood sugar levels, increases metabolic rates, and strengthens cardiovascular health.
