Scientific Background: The Importance of Omega 3

Fatty Acids
Since the 1970s scientific evidence has been accumulating that proves that essential fatty acids (EFAs) are vital for good health. EFAs are called “essential” because the human body cannot manufacture them, and so they have to be obtained from the diet. In particular, the omega 3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have vital roles to play in promoting good health. The best dietary sources of EPA and DHA are fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and herring, and this is why many doctors recommend at least two servings of fatty fish a week.

Unfortunately, the typical modern diet contains insufficient EFAs, and this is believed to contribute to many diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Inadequate EFA intake may also contribute to strokes. On the other hand, sufficient EFAs support good cardiovascular health, as well as good cognitive function, and healthy brains, nerves and skin.

The anti-inflammatory action of EFAs has been shown to reduce general inflammation in the body, and can help relieve arthritis symptoms.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Health
The benefits of the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA for the heart are particularly impressive. Research indicates they provide a number of cardiovascular benefits, which together add up to support against developing heart disease, and slowing the progression of heart disease in those who already have it. The benefits include lower levels of triglycerides, increased good cholesterol and decreased bad cholesterol, lower total levels of cholesterol, and less chance of arrhythmias. Omega 3 fatty acids can also lower blood pressure, and may even slow the heart rate.

The Problem with Dietary Sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Scientists recommend that people eat at least two servings of fatty fish per week, to ensure adequate intake of EPA and DHA. The problem is that most people struggle to eat sufficient fish. Also, farmed fish may be contaminated with PCBs and dioxins, while wild fish may be contaminated with pollutants such as mercury, lead and other heavy metals.

How SISU Omega 3 Liquid Helps
Omega 3 Liquid provides high quality omega 3 in a liquid oil form, with a delicious orange flavour and not a hint of fish taste. Each teaspoon contains 810 mg of EPA and 540 mg of DHA, providing an easy way to get enough of these important, therapeutic fats.

SISU Omega 3 Liquid not only makes it easy to get enough omega 3 fatty acids, it also removes contamination concerns. The oil is steam distilled, and then like all SISU fish oils is third-party tested to meet or exceed Canadian standards for potency, purity and freshness. This means that SISU Omega 3 Liquid has been tested to be free of heavy metals, including mercury as well as dioxins and PCBs. And SISU has used all natural flavours, as well as natural Vitamin E as the preservative. The result is a great-tasting liquid that supplies sufficient quantities of omega 3 – without the need to swallow 5 capsules every day. It can be taken on its own, or added to salad dressings or other foods such as yogurt.
